(About the painting)
I’m honored and grateful to have received a merit award for my painting “The Bageris Wave Wall Keeps Dancing Sunlight and First Kisses” last night at the @paintgrandtraverse reception. Thank you to the awards judge @kathleenbhudson for the selection and for sharing her perspective on the work in the show.
This painting was a joy to make. I encountered the spot after driving through the central neighborhoods in Traverse City. The dappled light, huge oak trees, and colorful mural on the wall grabbed my attention. Initially I thought a portrait of one tree would make for an interesting painting but a pulled back perspective seen in my viewfinder was more interesting. This pushed the buildings on 7th street to the horizon and gave most of the painting to the lawn in the foreground.
Like many of my paintings in neighborhoods, I met a lot of interesting people from different yet similar backgrounds. One of the locals who stopped by during the three afternoons was Matt who was born and raised in the house behind where I was standing. Matt is a cool dude who was riding a vintage bicycle covered in stickers wearing a Thrasher style Traverse City shirt and a trucker/skater hat. He introduced himself and complimented my painting. Matt grew up in this block and knows it probably better than anybody.
The next day I saw him again and we talked for a bit. He mentioned that he had just returned home the day before from the Bahamas which was apparently cooler than TC. We talked again about my painting and he told me that the Bageris family, who lives in the left house in my painting, painted the waves on the wall. He also shared that he was 11 or 12 when he had his first kiss sitting on that same wall many years ago. My jaw dropped.
Stories like this are the best part about getting to make paintings in new places for me. All of sudden the wall became far more than just a stack of painted bricks. I’m so happy with how this painting turned out and the response it’s had so far. Thank you to the everyone who helped make last nights reception a success!
